Process of Copper Extrusions

Raw Materials
High-purity raw material in the form of copper is used. It is always in excess of 99.9% pure in content. This provides optimum performance both electrically and thermally.
Sometimes, amounts of an alloying element such as phosphorus, tin, or silver are added to enhance certain aspects such as strength or hardness.

 

 

Melting & Casting
The selected raw material in raw form is heated in an appropriate range of temperatures in a furnace. Melting point is around about 1083°C in most traditional copper alloys. Additions can be carried out in the process of melting to alter the qualities in the copper alloy. Liquid copper is poured in the form of billets upon heating.

Extrusion process

The billets get heated to an appropriate range between 600 to 800°C to gain increased ductility. The billets are placed in an extrusion press. Used is correctly shaped die with desired special-shape. Enormous amount of pressure is applied by the press to drive in heated copper billet through die to form special-shape extrusion.

Heat Treatment

After extrusion, these specially shaped copper extrusions can be processed by heating to achieve improved mechanical strength. One of the most commonly practiced processes to treat these is annealing. This is achieved by heating these extrusions to a certain point and then allowing these to gradually get cold. This process can soften internal stress, improved ductility, and improved conductance in these copper extrusions.

Finishing And Quality Assurance

The extrusions later go through various final processing including cutting to final sizes, deburring, and surface treating. Surface treating can be plating or coating to obtain added corrosion resisting qualities.
