Application of Shaped Charges For Perforating Guns

Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD)
Used for safely disabling hazardous devices in Conventional Munitions Disposal (CMD) and Improvised Explosive Device Disposal (IEDD) operations. Their focused energy allows for precise disruption without triggering a wider explosion.

Aerospace and Space Exploration
Shaped charges have found applications in space missions. Such as enabling precise stage separation during rocket launches and breaking into planetary surfaces for sample collection.

Defence and Military

Central to modern defence systems, powering anti-tank weapons, guided missiles, and warheads.
Explosive Reactive Armor (ERA) Defeat: Advanced shaped charges with tandem warheads can overcome ERA systems on modern tanks.
Demolition: Military engineers use them for precise cutting and neutralising enemy equipment.

Oil and Gas Industry

Shaped charges are critical for perforating oil and gas wells. They create precise holes in the well casing and surrounding rock, allowing oil and gas to flow into the wellbore. This enhances extraction efficiency, particularly in tight formations.

Mining and Quarrying

Shaped charges are used for controlled blasting in mining and quarrying. They enable precise rock cutting with minimal collateral damage, allowing for efficient extraction of valuable minerals while reducing environmental impact compared to conventional blasting.

Manufacturing Process of Shaped Charges For Perforating Guns

Material Choice

The liner of a shaped charge is typically made of a material of a high density, such as, for instance, copper, or of tantalum. Such a material can create a highly energetic jet under an action of detonation of an explosive, which is needed for piercing a target in a hollow cavity.

Liner Manufacturing

The liner is constructed by precision machining or powder metallurgy. In precision machining, a metal piece is carefully machined in a shape of a shape of a scalloped profile in a highly controlled process. In powder metallurgy, powder of metal is compacted in a shape and sintering is done in a shape and in a required density and strength.

Explosive Loading

The explosive is loaded into the shaped charge in a controlled facility. The liner is precisely aligned and inserted in case of the charge so it is in a proper position in relation to the explosive.

Assembly

Following the manufacture of the individual parts and explosive loading, the shaped charge is assembled. The liner is carefully placed into the explosive housing, and all the parts are firmly attached together to provide structural integrity under detonation.

Quality Control

● Dimensional Testing:

The individual charges undergo dimensional checks for such key measurements as diameter of liner, height, and wall thickness. Deviation of these measurements beyond tolerance can have a negative impact on operation of the charge.

Performance Testing:

Shaped charges are tested in lab and in-borehole. Lab testing includes measurements of simulated rocky material depth of penetration, velocities of jets, and output of energy. In-borehole testing is in true wellbores for true-world operation validation.

Safety and Handling

Transportation:

The charges in custom-made containers which meet regulations for transporting explosives. The containers have been constructed in a protective style for weather, impact, and shock.

Storage:

Storage should be in a well ventilated, secure, place of separate storage. Storage location should be away from sources of sparks, heat, and other sources of ignition.

Downhole Operations:

During wellbore operation, safety is maintained stringently. The trained experts in explosives operate these using appropriate machines in a bid not to accidentally detonate.

FAQ

Q: Does samples available before order?

A: Yes, if it is the stock product, the sample can be sent for free in 3 days, if customized, will be sent within 7 days.

Q: How about the sample policy?

A: We can provide free sample. However, you have to pay the cost of courier by express like: DHL, TNT, UPS and FEDEX.

Q: Can you make my designs?

A: Yes, OEM/ODM is welcome, pls feel free to send us pictures. If necessary, we can keep your design be protected under law.

Q: How could I pay them?

A: Paypal, Western Union, T/T, L/C are acceptable, so just let us know which is convenient for you.

Q: Can I get discounts?

A: Yes, for big order, old customer and frequent customers, we give reasonable discounts.

Q: What is a perforating gun shaped charge?

A: A shaped charge perforating gun detonates almost instantaneously when the electrical charge is sent from the perforating truck. The detonation creates a jet that has a velocity of 25,000 to 30,000 ft/second. The impact pressure caused by the jet is approximately 10 to 15 million psi.

Q: What is the performance of shaped charge?

A: In general, shaped charges can penetrate a steel plate as thick as 150% to 700% of their diameter, depending on the charge quality. The figure is for basic steel plate, not for the composite armor, reactive armor, or other types of modern armor.

Q: What is the difference between EFP and shaped charge?

A: Both shaped charges and EFPs (explosively formed penetrators) are types of explosive devices designed to penetrate armor, but they differ in the shape of their metal liner and the resulting projectile. Shaped charges use a conical liner to create a high-velocity jet, while EFPs use a dish-shaped liner to form a slug-like projectile.

Q: Why do shaped charges use copper?

A: The use of copper-tungsten alloys for shaped charge liners leads to an improving of the jet penetrability into an homogeneous steel target. In comparison with copper jets, the penetration depth can be increased by a factor 1.3. The improving is due to the increasing of both the density and the break-up time.

Q: What is the stand off distance of a shaped charge?

A: The standoff of a shaped charge is the distance from the base of the liner or cavity to the target. It is known that the standoff in shaped charges has an optimum distance for best penetration performance.
