Manufacturing Process of Shaped Charges For Perforating Guns
The liner of a shaped charge is typically made of a material of a high density, such as, for instance, copper, or of tantalum. Such a material can create a highly energetic jet under an action of detonation of an explosive, which is needed for piercing a target in a hollow cavity.
The liner is constructed by precision machining or powder metallurgy. In precision machining, a metal piece is carefully machined in a shape of a shape of a scalloped profile in a highly controlled process. In powder metallurgy, powder of metal is compacted in a shape and sintering is done in a shape and in a required density and strength.
The explosive is loaded into the shaped charge in a controlled facility. The liner is precisely aligned and inserted in case of the charge so it is in a proper position in relation to the explosive.
Following the manufacture of the individual parts and explosive loading, the shaped charge is assembled. The liner is carefully placed into the explosive housing, and all the parts are firmly attached together to provide structural integrity under detonation.
Quality Control
The individual charges undergo dimensional checks for such key measurements as diameter of liner, height, and wall thickness. Deviation of these measurements beyond tolerance can have a negative impact on operation of the charge.
● Performance Testing:
Shaped charges are tested in lab and in-borehole. Lab testing includes measurements of simulated rocky material depth of penetration, velocities of jets, and output of energy. In-borehole testing is in true wellbores for true-world operation validation.
Safety and Handling
Transportation:
The charges in custom-made containers which meet regulations for transporting explosives. The containers have been constructed in a protective style for weather, impact, and shock.
Storage:
Storage should be in a well ventilated, secure, place of separate storage. Storage location should be away from sources of sparks, heat, and other sources of ignition.
Downhole Operations:
During wellbore operation, safety is maintained stringently. The trained experts in explosives operate these using appropriate machines in a bid not to accidentally detonate.
